Can You Claim Artwork as a Tax Deduction? What Small Business Owners Need to Know

There's a benefit available to small business owners that not enough people are taking advantage of — and it involves putting original art on your walls.

The Australian Government's Instant Asset Write-off Scheme allows eligible small businesses to claim an immediate 100% tax deduction on artwork purchases up to $20,000. The scheme has been extended to 30 June 2026, which means there's still time to invest in something that genuinely improves your space — and claim it back in the same financial year.

What Is the Instant Asset Write-off and How Does It Apply to Art?

The Instant Asset Write-off is an Australian federal government initiative that allows small businesses to deduct the full cost of eligible assets in the year they're purchased, rather than depreciating them over time.

Original artwork qualifies — as long as it meets a few straightforward criteria. It's one of those intersections where good financial sense and a considered workspace can genuinely come together.

Is My Business Eligible?

If your business has an aggregated annual turnover of less than $10 million, you're likely eligible. The artwork itself needs to meet the following conditions, as outlined by the ATO:

  • It must be a tangible, physical item
  • It must be purchased primarily for display within a business premises
  • It must be capable of being moved
  • It must not be considered trading stock

Offices, reception areas, boardrooms, studios, consulting rooms — all of these count. If clients or colleagues spend time in the space, original art belongs there.

What Artwork Qualifies?

Each individual artwork must be valued at under $20,000, and it must be purchased and installed by 30 June 2026 to be claimed in this financial year.

Original paintings, drawings, and works on paper all qualify. The kind of work that brings character to a room, that people notice and remember — that's exactly what this scheme is designed to support.

Why Original Art in a Business Space?

Beyond the tax benefit, there's a quieter case to be made for original art in a workplace.

A considered space communicates something about the people who work in it. Original artwork — chosen with intention — signals that detail matters, that aesthetics are taken seriously, that the environment has been thought about. Clients feel it. Teams feel it.

And unlike most business purchases, a well-chosen original work doesn't depreciate in the way equipment does. Some appreciate. Most simply endure, improving the space around them for years.

How to Claim It

The process is straightforward — but as with anything tax-related, the specifics matter. Before purchasing, confirm your eligibility with your accountant or financial advisor. They'll verify your turnover threshold and ensure the works are correctly categorised.

Once that's confirmed, the deduction is claimed in your tax return for the year of purchase. No complex depreciation schedules and no waiting.
